Long, Strange Trip…. and it’s not over!

This week marks the 6 month anniversary of the COVID-19 closure of Creator Haven. We are still closed but we are not out of business yet and looking forward to the gradual resumption of operations!

Among our Members and Friends there have been some close calls and catastrophic losses both from COVID-19 and the wildfires. They are on our minds and in our hearts. We fervently hope that you and yours remain healthy and safe.

During the closure we have remained busy. Pat made a COVID quilt, finished a crocheted Afghan she started 10+ years ago, finished a baby blanket, crocheted a really cool hat and more. Glenn went back to being a (non-professional) Python programmer and largely completed development of a custom inventory and accounting package for Creator Haven, became a Zoom gourmand and thought of lots of things he could and should do but didn’t actually do. We also spent about two weeks completing a physical count of Creator Haven’s inventory – a project that was somewhat overdue.

With Santa Cruz County moving from Purple to Red we are contemplating what re-opening may look like. In-person classes are still beyond the current event horizon, but providing highly limited studio access to our Studio Members is starting to look practical. In the meantime, if you have something to be fired or need to purchase tools or material, please get in touch and we can make arrangements.

For now stay safe and stay healthy — we wish you well!

— Pat and Glenn

Dia de los Muertos Painted Plaster Skulls

We’ve been a little lax about keeping this website up to date due to crazy busy times at Creator Haven. Pat’s been teaching up a storm expanding to paint pouring and Dia de los Muertos Painted Skulls classes in addition to silver metal clay, Kuem Boo and fused glass classes. She is currently creating the next schedule of classes which will be posted on Cabrillo Extension’s website as well as here as soon as they are finalized.

Glenn has been consumed with fused glass fever and we’ll be adding more fused glass classes, too. Please check out some of his latest creations in the new Glenn’s Glass Gallery

In the meantime, there are still a few classes before Christmas and, as always, we are ready to schedule a private or small group class at a time that works for you. Just let us know!

Pam East: Making Metal Clay Boxes

Master metal clay artist Pam East has created a hinged box project focusing on intricate, delicate details. This challenging, multi-layered project will greatly expand your metal clay skill set as you build a hinged box featuring tiny scenes, tiny gemstones, and tight, unobtrusive hinges with smooth action. The precise work will include rolling, texturing and cutting the clay; sanding and prepping greenware elements; creating and fitting mitered corners; and building small, functional components like hinges, cotter pins, and clasp elements. You’ll also be flush setting tiny stones, designing and constructing an open bail, and learning how to mask stamps and texture plates for unique results. You’ll personalize your box with Pam’s collection of texture plates and design molds!

This workshop is intended for students with recent successful metal clay experience, including rolling clay to an even thickness, working with stamps and templates, and proficiency with greenware finishing and using syringe. We’re providing all the tools, equipment and materials you’ll need to complete the projects, so you just have to bring eye magnification and settle in to have fun and learn with a master!

Classes, Community, Creativity

Creator Haven is a community of artists supporting and inspiring each other in the design and fabrication of jewelry, silver clay, fused glass, enameling and traditional small metal art. Internationally renowned artists including Pam East, Charles Lewton-Brain and Ricky Frank will all be teaching here again in 2019. Multiple workshops are offered through Cabrillo Community College’s Extension Program. Private and semi-private classes can be designed to meet your personal area of interest, schedule and skill level.

Our members enjoy full access to our extensively equipped studio for one low monthly fee. Hand tools, rolling mill, kilns, torches, metal shear, polishing and grinding machines, glass saws, lapping wheel and more are waiting for you. Check our hours, check our classes and check us out!

More New Classes

After a wonderfully slothful recuperation we are back from a great vacation. Of course we had to take some classes while we were gone. We both enjoyed learning how to cure bacon and Pat had unplanned fun making her own Mardi Gras mask in a little store we wandered into on Bourbon St — anyone want a class on that?

It’s time to go full swing with spring classes. Many are already posted but there are lots more coming (including some of your favorite visiting teachers) so check back often!
