Fused Glass: Pattern Bar Platter – Session 1 of 2

Fri, Aug 06, 2021 -- 6:30 PM-9:00 PM at Creator Haven LLC

Fused glass is a fascinating medium. No matter how precisely you cut the pieces, no matter how perfectly the kiln repeats a firing recipe, there are always variations that make every final piece unique.

Pattern bars are parallel rectangles of glass stacked to create an interesting pattern when sliced “across” the grain. The slices of pattern bar are laid flat and arranged to provide a unique repeating pattern that can be incorporated into the final piece.

During the first week of this class, you will review the fundamentals of fused glass and create your pattern bar stack. Your pattern bar will be fused (kiln fired) and ready to slice for the second week of the class.

During the second class you will grind and slice your pattern bar and use the slices, along with other pieces of clear, transparent, or opaque glass to create your final design. Following the second class your piece will be fired twice in the kiln – first to fuse all the glass pieces together and once more to slump it into your desired shape. Finished pieces will be ready to pick up a week after the second class.

You will enjoy this class regardless of your level of glass fusing experience. Most pieces require only straight cuts of glass – no curves or freehand cutting. The soft curves and variety of the pattern are produced by the way the stack is created. And every stack, every pattern bar is unique!

While this class does involve slicing the pattern bar on a diamond-blade table saw, that step can be performed by the instructor upon request.

This class is limited to a maximum of 5 students and a minimum of 2 students.
