Fused glass is the art of layering, decorating, and firing glass in a kiln to create decorative and functional pieces. Through a variety of dynamic, hands-on projects, students will gain a solid introduction to the art of fused glass. Learn about different forms of art glass, including sheet glass, glass powder, iridized, and dichroic glass. We will learn to cut and shape glass using scoring and breaking tools, mosaic nippers, saws, diamond drills and grinders. Learn about the basic properties of glass and how the working temperature during kiln firing controls the look and structure of the final piece. The use of ceramic molds and fiber paper to add 3-dimensional shape and structure will also be introduced.
Students will finish at least 4 pieces, depending on size and complexity, chosen from a variety of project options including plates, trays, bowls, decorative items (such as glass dragonflies or succulents), plaques and a wall vase. Final projects will be available for pick-up a week after the last class to allow for kiln firing time.
Focus is on design and learning the skills needed to implement your design. Technical details such as firing schedules and kiln programming will be mentioned for general information. Materials fee includes use of all tools, kiln firing, glass, and consumable supplies. Firing services will be provided by the instructor.
