Eighteen (18) hours of instruction presented on six (6) consecutive Friday afternoons 1 pm to 4 pm.
Over the course of this 6-week class you’ll learn the essential building blocks of jewelry making, from how to make and attach findings, to ways to cut and shape metal, to cold connections and beginning soldering. You will learn which jewelry tools are essential and how to choose the right one for your purpose. Once you’ve completed this class, you’ll have the skills you need to begin designing and creating your own unique jewelry, and you’ll be ready to take Jewelry Essentials 2, which introduces soldering, bezels and more.
Curriculum Overview:
Basic wire work (wrapped loops, making findings such as ear wires and clasps,briolette wraps, making headpins, and more)
Cutting metal with saws, hand and bench shears, disc cutters, and hydraulic presses
Shaping metal with hammers, dapping blocks, and mandrels
Texturing metal with hammers, stamps, and rolling mill
Filing and sanding
Attaching metal elements with cold connections (rivets, tabs, crimps, and more)
Polishing by hand and with power tools
Coloring metal with heat patinas and cold patinas
The Class Fee includes all instruction, use of studio tools and equipment and a complete set of the instructional handouts. It does not include the required $70 Materials Fee which will be collected during the first session of the class.
