Pattern bars are parallel rectangles of glass stacked so that they create an interesting pattern when sliced “across” the grain. The resulting slices of pattern bar are laid flat and arranged to provide a unique repeating pattern that can be incorporated into the final piece. The soft curves and variety of the pattern result from the way the stack is arranged. And every stack, every pattern bar is unique!
During the first class, you will review the fundamentals of fused glass and create your pattern bar stack. Your pattern bar will be fused (kiln fired) and ready to slice for the second class session.
In the second session you will grind and slice your pattern bar and use the slices, along with other pieces of clear, transparent, or opaque glass to create your final design. At the end of class your piece will be fired twice in the kiln – first to fuse all the glass pieces together and once more to slump it into your desired shape. While this does involve slicing the pattern bar on a diamond-blade table saw, that step will be performed by the instructor at your request.
No experience is required. Wear comfortable clothes and closed-toe shoes. Class size is limited to 5 students so register early! The materials fee includes use of all tools, kiln firing, glass, and consumable supplies. Finished pieces will be available for pickup a week after class.
Please note that all students who participate in classes offered at Creator Haven must be vaccinated, and will be asked to confirm their vaccination status when they arrive. Students will also be asked to complete additional health and safety forms upon arrival.
